Make-up Classes & Substitute Faculty

Make-up Classes

The Theatre Program understands that as working artists your commitments outside of Columbia may occasionally conflict with your teaching schedule. Additionally, we support making choices in an abundance of caution with regards to illness. We will work with you to ensure that students receive a full course while you continue to create your art and take care of yourself. There is a built-in make-up class week at the end of each semester; all classrooms are reserved this week at their usual time for such classes. Please let students know as soon as possible if you intend to use this make-up week.

If you require additional time and classroom space, please find a new day and time that works with every student in your class, then send a request via email to the Program Office no later than four (4) business days before the scheduled make-up class. It will be your responsibility to inform your students of the details of the new class.

Substitute Faculty

The Theatre Program expects your presence at all your class meetings as detailed in your offer letter; the use of a sub is discouraged. However, if you need someone to cover your class, please inform your Concentration Head so they are aware. Also note, the Program is not responsible for paying that sub.

Another option is to establish you and your sub as co-faculty. This requires the approval of their teaching CV from the Concentration Head, the Director of Academic Administration, and the Chair before the semester begins. The salary allocation for the class is pre-set to match the level of work of each faculty member and both will receive payment from the University.
